Agra is famous in the world as the city of the Taj Mahal. The history of Agra dates back to the times of the Mahabharata. Agra is located on the west bank of the Yamuna River, 204 km south of Delhi.

Agra has a domestic airport and a good connection network, both railway and road. 

City Attractions 

Taj Mahal 

The Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century by Shahjahan - the fifth Mughal emperor, to commemorate his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shahjahan loved his wife so much that, after his death in 1631, he decided to immortalize their love in the form of the Taj Mahal. 

Agra Fort 

Located on the banks of the Yamuna River 2 km northwest of the Taj Mahal, designed and built by Akbar in 1565 AD, the Agra fort houses the beautiful Pearl Mosque and numerous other palaces including the Jahangir Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas , Diwan-i-Am and Moti Masjid.

Akbar Mausoleum 

Located about 10 km from Agra, in the small town of Sikandra (4 km from Agra), this mausoleum is an example of the fusion between the Islamic and Hindu architectural style. 

Itimad-Ud-Daulah 

This tomb was built by Nur Jahan - one of the Mughal empresses, to commemorate his father Ghiasud-Din-Beg between 1622-1628 AD

Sikandra

Four kilometers from Agra is the mausoleum of Akbar. 

Fatehpur Sikri

At 37 km from Agra is the city of Fatehpur Sikri, almost entirely in red sandstone. 

Mathura

Krishna, one of the incarnations of God Vishnu, was born here. Mathura, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus, is located 58 km from Agra. 

Shopping

Agra is famous for its desserts and savory dishes, such as e.g. the petha and the dal-moth. Agra is also known for its inlaid marble, for leather and brass objects, for jewels with precious and semi-precious stones, finely worked and for embroideries decorated with gold thread. Most of these items are available in the Taj area.
