Different Types of Trains in India: A Simple Guide


India has one of the largest railway networks in the world. From fast trains to luxury ones, Indian Railways offers different types of trains to suit every travel need. Let’s take a look at the major types of trains in India.

1. Passenger Trains

These are the most basic trains. They stop at almost every station and are mostly used by people traveling short distances. They are cheap but slow.

2. Express and Superfast Trains

These trains run faster and stop at fewer stations than passenger trains. Superfast trains have even higher speeds and an extra fee.

3. Mail Trains

Mail trains carry both passengers and mail. They are similar to express trains but give priority to postal services.

4. Rajdhani Express

5. Shatabdi Express

These are day trains connecting major cities. They are fast, air-conditioned, and meals are served onboard. Shatabdi trains return to the starting station the same day.

6. Duronto Express

These are long-distance, non-stop trains with very few stops. They are fast and fully air-conditioned.

7. Garib Rath

“Garib Rath” means “Poor Man’s Chariot.” These are air-conditioned trains with affordable fares, mainly for middle-class passengers.

8. Humsafar Express

These are modern trains with 3-tier AC coaches, LED screens, clean toilets, and vending machines. They are designed for comfort at reasonable prices.

9. Vande Bharat Express

India’s first semi-high-speed train. It’s fully air-conditioned, has comfortable seating, modern toilets, and no engine (self-propelled).
